There are Deaf communities throughout Southern and Western NSW from Wollongong and Nowra to Griffith, Orange and Broken Hill.
The Deaf Society services these regions on an outreach basis supporting the local Deaf and hearing communities through:
- visiting individual regions twice a year
- a video link service called DeafNet
The Deaf Society also has secure video remote interpreting services for those times when it is not possible to get a local interpreter.
The DeafNet Project extends the Deaf Society’s information and expertise to rural and regional NSW. DeafNet uses a laptop with webcam and dedicated broadband internet connection located in the local host service to connect local Deaf people seeking information, referral and support with staff in our Sydney office.
During biannual regional visits, we can provide Deafness Awareness sessions and seminars on working effectively with interpreters and assist regional services to consult with the local Deaf community. We also arrange special interest seminars and social events with local Deaf people.
We support individuals and generic services by request at any time of year. Deaf individuals in rural areas have the same needs as their hearing peers and we work collaboratively with local generic and disability agencies to make sure Deaf people get the services they need and agencies receive guidance and support to deliver their services effectively to Deaf people. Agencies and individuals can contact us at any time that they need individual and family support.
Interpreting services for the Southern and Western NSW are available through the Deaf Society’s Interpreting Service. To find out more, click here.

As one of the largest remote areas in NSW, it is no surprise to know that there are few established Deaf specific services. However, Broken Hill is home to one of the oldest Deaf and hard of hearing support services in regional NSW, the Broken Hill and District Hearing Resource Centre.
The Deaf Society has links and previously conducted joint work with the Hearing Resource Centre. Agencies and individuals can contact the Deaf Society at any time there is a need for individual and family support.
