During this spring of 2010, the Finnish Parliament is discussing the new legislative proposal for Interpreting Services for the persons with disabilities (i.e. Deaf, Deafblind, hard of hearing and deafened persons, and persons with severe speech disorder).

  World Federation of the Deaf expresses its deepest sympathies and solidarity to all Deaf victims and their families that have been affected by the earthquake. WFD strongly urges international aid organisations to ensure that Deaf people have access to immediate rescue and recovery efforts, and that they are fully involved in the reconstruction process.

For many years she has attended AUSLAN (Australian Sign Language) classes, held in venues from Moruya on the south coast of NSW to Tweed Heads, to The Pines in Queensland. Although these lessons have come in a variety of formats, she has now gained some aptitude in communicating in AUSLAN, and she finds it of great benefit.

NSW has been the missing link in Deaf Sports in Australia for far too long, and we rely on local people in NSW to make something happen! Deaf Sports Australia has been consulting with key stakeholders in NSW over the last 12 months, including the NSW Government, and we feel this is the best way forward.

Findings Could Lead to Improved Lip-Reading Training for the Deaf

  A research team from the School of Computing Sciences at UEA compared the performance of a machine-based lip-reading system with that of 19 human lip-readers. They found that the automated system significantly outperformed the human lip-readers - scoring a recognition rate of 80 per cent, compared with only 32 per cent for human viewers on the same task.
