How to become an interpreter
The Deaf Society and most other organisations that employ Auslan interpreters will only employ those that are qualified by NAATI to interpret between Auslan and English. To become qualified by NAATI you must pass a NAATI examination. Before you sit the exam, you will need to make sure that you are not only fluent in Auslan and English but have knowledge about interpreting as a profession including the ethics which interpreters are required to follow.
In NSW, accredited Auslan language courses are provided by Deaf Education Network (the education department of the Deaf Society) and TAFE.
TAFE also offers a Diploma of Interpreting (Auslan) and this course is run approximately every second year.
For more information, see Becoming an Interpreter on the Australian Sign Language Interpreters Association’s (ASLIA) website.
