Employment Opportunities

Sign Language Communications NSW (SLC NSW) prides itself on being an employer of choice for Auslan interpreters. We strive to ensure interpreters have the best working conditions including access to team interpreting (where appropriate) and adequate preparation materials.

SLC NSW employs interpreters who are accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI). The Deaf Society also employs Deaf (Relay) Interpreters.

Interpreters are employed on a casual basis and are covered by professional indemnity insurance, WorkCover and are entitled to superannuation where applicable.

SLC NSW updates interpreters with quarterly Interpreter bulletins and provides information about professional development opportunities.

To arrange an interview and get an application package please contact the Interpreting Service.

SLC NSW recruits interpreters on an ongoing basis. To find out about other employment opportunities at the Deaf Society, click here.

How to become an interpreter
The Deaf Society and most other organisations that employ Auslan interpreters will only employ those that are qualified by NAATI to interpret between Auslan and English. To become qualified by NAATI you must pass a NAATI examination. Before you sit the exam, you will need to make sure that you are not only fluent in Auslan and English but have knowledge about interpreting as a profession including the ethics which interpreters are required to follow.

In NSW, accredited Auslan language courses are provided by Deaf Education Network (the education department of the Deaf Society) and TAFE.

TAFE also offers a Diploma of Interpreting (Auslan) and this course is run approximately every second year.
