Commitment to Professional Development

In line with the ASLIA Code of Ethics and ASLIA's drive for a Revalidation Revolution, Sign Language Communications NSW (SLC NSW) has decided to favourably allocate assignments to interpreters that are part of NAATI’s Revalidation of Accreditation system.

Interpreters who have been accredited since 1 January 2007 are automatically part of the Revalidation system but those accredited prior to that date have a choice about whether they wish to 'opt in' to Revalidation. SLC NSW encourages all interpreters to opt in to this system as we believe that this is a reflection of interpreters' commitment to professional development, a fundamental tenet of the Code of Ethics interpreters abide by.

Within the NAATI Revalidation of Accreditation system, interpreter accreditation is valid for a period of three years. During this time a minimum of 40 assignments should be undertaken per year as well as fulfilment of professional development equating to 40 points.

More information on these requirements as well as the log sheet for professional development and work practice can be found on NAATI's website.

SLC NSW is committed to providing professional development opportunities for interpreters and as part of its strategic plan aims to deliver four workshops in metropolitan Sydney as well as two workshops in regional NSW each year. Attendance at these workshops will usually attract 20 points towards an interpreter's NAATI professional development requirements.

NOTE:
Interpreters who were accredited prior to 1 January, 2007 and have chosen to opt in should send in evidence of having opted in to Revalidation of Accreditation to Kathy Wright, Coordinator Interpreting.

Following submission of your log sheets to NAATI over the three years you will receive a letter from NAATI renewing your accreditation for another three years. This should be forwarded to Sign Language Communcations NSW.
