The Deaf Society of NSW has supported deaf people and their families for over 95 years. We have a specialist support for parents and families with deaf children; our Parent to Parent Mentoring is one of our programs dedicated to helping families and children.
Over 90% of babies born with a hearing loss are born to hearing parents who have no previous experience of deafness and no contacts who have experience raising deaf children. The birth of a baby is a life-changing event by itself and parents and siblings need time to adjust to their new family member. Families of children with hearing loss often need to make decisions about technology, communication and education - many parents find that talking to another parent who has been through the same experience is a great help.
Mentoring is a supportive relationship between parents of deaf children, one whose child is a little older and has been through that life phase and the other parent who is going through a new stage in their deaf child's life. Mentors offer the benefit of their experience offering guidance, advice, support, and feedback to the other parent. |
