Accredited Auslan Courses

There is no single pathway to learning Auslan. Deaf Education Network has two streams of Auslan courses. To learn more about the pathways to learning Auslan, click here.

Deaf Education Network offers the following accredited Auslan courses:

These courses are for students who:

  • Want VETAB accredited training (a nationally recognised qualification)
  • Want to fast-track their study of Auslan and receive a full certificate or diploma qualification in less than a year

You will enjoy Deaf Education Network's unique and intensive approach to learning Auslan through:

  • Face-to-face weekly sessions
  • Experiencing full immersion Auslan-only workshops and retreats
  • Structured home-study
  • Video journal tasks
  • The Mentor Program, tailored for Certificate IV in Auslan and Diploma of Auslan students

Certificate II in Auslan

There are no prerequisites for this course. However, we recommend people experience at least one of the Basic Auslan community courses before committing to this intensive accredited course.

You will:

  • Investigate Deaf culture and community
  • Develop visual and gestural skills to learn Auslan
  • Develop functional sign language skills in basic contexts
  • Be immersed in a new and visual language
  • Attend face-to-face classes two nights per week
  • Attend Auslan Only BBQ, Auslan Only Weekend 1 and other weekend workshops

Certificate III in Auslan

Prerequisite: you need to complete Certificate II in Auslan or equivalent before enrolling in this course.

You will:

  • Continue to develop your signing skills to a comfortable level of communication
  • Refine your receptive and expressive Auslan skills
  • Gain more confidence to converse in Auslan and to communicate more effectively
  • Learn about the history of Deaf education and culture in Australia and worldwide
  • Attend face-to-face classes two nights per week
  • Attend Auslan Only Weekend 2, Hippie Feast and other weekend workshops

Certificate IV in Auslan

Prerequisite: you need to complete Certificate III in Auslan or equivalent before enrolling in this course.

You will:

  • Advance your signing skills to communicate more confidently
  • Build your communication skills focusing on different genres - Procedure, Explanation, Discussion, Argument and Recount
  • Fine tune your Auslan expressive and receptive skills
  • Build on your understanding of the interpreting process, Deafblindness and contemporary Deaf issues
  • Participate in the CIA IV Mentor Program in small groups outside of the classroom with a member of Sydney's Deaf community
  • Participate in The Great Debate, attend Auslan Only Weekend 3 and other weekend workshops.

Diploma of Auslan

Prerequisite: you need to complete Certificate IV in Auslan or equivalent before applying for this course. Applicants must successfully demonstrate their current competency in Auslan at a Skills Assessment interview to be offered a place in the course.

You will:

  • Enhance and refine your Auslan expressive style and sharpen your receptive and expressive skills
  • Advance your communication skills by using the genres of Information Report, Narrative and Description
  • Learn how to critically self-analyse, provide and receive constructive feedback and gain some interpreting experience
  • Participate in the Diploma Mentor Program in small groups outside the classroom with a member of Sydney's Deaf community
  • Attend Storytelling Day and Deaf Studies Weekend Retreat where you will be discussing contemporary Deaf issues in Australia and the world plus other weekend workshops
