Why should I join ASLIA? |
 |
Professional Development
|
ASLIA (NSW) runs workshops on topics that are practical and relevant to interpreters e.g. fingerspelling, ethics, specific interpreting settings. Workshops are run according to the needs and interests of our members, who receive discounts on attendance fees. Financial assistance is available for members who wish to attend workshops, conferences and other opportunities for professional development.
Professional Education
ASLIA (NSW) lobbies institutions such as TAFE colleges and universities to establish and maintain courses in Auslan and Auslan interpreting.

Information
ASLIA (NSW) holds regular meetings. These meetings are used to share information between members and between the Executive committee and the membership. It is also an opportunity for any members to raise issues of concern to them. Members can benefit from meeting and listening to Deaf and hearing guest presenters from relevant organisations. In addition, minutes of meetings, along with fliers for job and education opportunities and other issues of interest, are distributed to all members in our bimonthly mail-out. Email bulletins are also used to keep our members up-to-date with events and issues as they arise.
Support and Social Interaction
Interpreting can be an isolating profession. Many interpreters work alone and rarely have the opportunity to talk to other interpreters about issues which arise. ASLIA (NSW) provides a forum where interpreters can come together to discuss issues of importance to interpreters.
Advice and Research
ASLIA (NSW) holds resources including videos, books and conference proceedings which can be borrowed by members. ASLIA (NSW) can help members with advice about working conditions, ethics, employers and training.
Value for Money
Annual membership of ASLIA (NSW) is $60 for full members (accredited interpreters), $40 for associate members (unaccredited members including students), $125 for corporate members and $100 for corporate associates. Members can claim their membership fees back as work-related expenses at tax time.
